Presentation Abstract

The Value of Nutrition

Malnutrition is a modifiable risk factor for health complications. Outpatient nutrition care is poorly reimbursed and lacks standardized diagnosis and treatment options. While advocating for clinical resources, appropriate coding and payer reimbursement is important to funding vital nutrition care, ensuring the medical community can prove the VALUE of nutrition care in terms of outcomes over cost could provide additional evidence. Healthcare professionals, payers, and policymakers should harness the value of nutrition by measuring the cost and effectiveness of nutrition support on outcomes such as quality of life, infectious & noninfectious complications, length of hospital stay, mortality, and hospital readmissions. This presentation will enhance understanding of how defining the value of nutrition can support cost-efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality healthcare, and share perspectives for future directions.
