Dennis Black is Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco and Head of the Division of Chronic Diseases.

His research focus is on osteoporosis and he has led many randomized trials and observational studies. He was the Principal Investigator of the NIAMS-funded PTH and Alendronate Trial (PaTH), the Fracture Intervention Trial, the main trial supporting the efficacy of alendronate and the HORIZON PFT, the pivotal trial supporting zoledronic acid. He was also the Principal Investigator on the only two randomized studies of long-term bisphosphonate use/drug holidays. He has been the lead author on these and other studies published in The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JAMA, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, and others. He is currently leading the Foundation for NIH (FNIH) Bone Quality Project with a goal of establishing a surrogate measure for fractures to facilitate future drug development. In addition, he has a strong interest in atypical femur fracture (AFF) and is the Principal Investigator on a large AFF observational study at Kaiser Permanente Southern California and Co-Investigator on a NIAMS-funded study of AFF in Denmark.
