Helping Our Partners Fund Collaborative Prevention Research Activities
|
|
The ODP mission is to improve public health by increasing the scope, quality, dissemination, and impact of prevention research supported by NIH. One way we work toward this mission is by contributing funds to NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices (ICOs) and federal agencies to help support prevention research activities that might not otherwise be funded. ODP co-funds many projects in response to ICO requests for prevention research activities that address evidence gaps, improve methodology, and train the next generation of investigators from diverse backgrounds.
We recently analyzed ODP’s co-funded projects from Fiscal Years 2012–2021 (FY12–21) to identify trends and characterize projects. Learn how ODP’s co-funding grew from FY12–21 and what types of activities we supported.

ODP Art Challenge: How Prevention Can Create Better Health for Everyone
ODP is excited to launch our first ever challenge prize competition! We are inviting teens and young adults between the ages of 13 and 22 to share original artwork showing how prevention can help improve health equity. Their artwork may be featured on ODP's website and social media, and they could even win up to $3,500!
If you know a teen or young adult with ideas about what people or communities can do to prevent disease and injury and promote more equitable health outcomes for everyone, encourage them to submit their artwork to ODP by January 31, 2024, 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time (ET).
By sparking their creativity and curiosity about how prevention can improve the health of all people, we hope this challenge will stimulate the next generation’s interest in STEM and health equity!

New Publications on Nutrition as Prevention for Improved Cancer Health Outcomes
Two new publications based on the NIH Pathways to Prevention Workshop: Nutrition as Prevention for Improved Cancer Health Outcomes are now available:
- The federal partners meeting report highlights opportunities and resources to help federal agencies and the research community address the independent panel’s recommendations.
- The portfolio review: data snapshot describes current NIH research activities in the topic area. It can be used to identify research and funding gaps and opportunities and will serve as a baseline to measure future progress.
Coming Soon! ODP FY24–28 Strategic Plan – Prevention Research: Creating a Healthier Future for All
ODP’s Strategic Plan for FY24–28 is going to be published in the coming months! The plan, Prevention Research: Creating a Healthier Future for All, outlines how our office will work to increase the scope, quality, dissemination, and impact of prevention research supported by NIH over the next five years. We are looking forward to sharing this strategic plan and will be sending out more information once it is published.

Tobacco Regulatory Science Program Announces CASEL 2.0 and TCORS 3.0
NIH and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are pleased to announce the recent awarding of eight new Center grants.
The Center for Coordination of Analysis, Science, Enhancement, and Logistics (CASEL 2.0) in Tobacco Regulatory Science is the coordination and dissemination hub for all FDA Center for Tobacco Products (CTP)-funded extramural research at NIH. New to CASEL 2.0 is an Opportunity Fund that will solicit rapid-response projects from the extramural community to address CTP’s high priority, time-sensitive research needs.
Additionally, seven institutions have been awarded a third cohort of the multidisciplinary Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science (TCORS 3.0), a long-standing component of the Tobacco Regulatory Science Program. Scientists with a broad range of expertise (e.g., epidemiology, economics, toxicology, addiction, and marketing) will generate critical research to inform FDA’s regulation of tobacco products.

Request for Information: Inviting Comments and Suggestions on Updating the NIH Mission
NIH is the nation’s medical research agency—making important discoveries that improve health and save lives. NIH’s current mission statement is “to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability.”
NIH issued a Request for Information (RFI) inviting feedback on a proposed update to the NIH mission statement: “To seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and to apply that knowledge to optimize health and prevent or reduce illness for all people.”
Input is sought broadly from NIH staff, NIH-funded institutions, scientific and professional societies, the clinical practice community, advocacy organizations, and the public. Please take a moment to review the RFI and share your input.

NIH Designates People With Disabilities as Population With Health Disparities
Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, M.D., Director of the National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), designated people with disabilities as a population with health disparities for research supported by NIH. A health disparity designation helps to encourage research specific to the health issues and unmet health needs of the population. The decision was made in consultation with Robert Otto Valdez, Ph.D., the Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, after careful consideration of a report (PDF) delivered by an NIMHD advisory council, input from the disability community, and a review of the science and evidence.
Request for Information: Developing Consent Language for Research Using Digital Health Technologies
NIH is seeking comment on a draft resource, “Informed Consent for Research Using Digital Health Technologies: Points to Consider and Sample Language,” which is focused on bolstering consent language for research involving digital health technologies. The draft resource, when final, is intended to assist the research community in developing and reviewing informed consent documents involving digital health technologies.
The RFI is now open and will close on December 12, 2023. Please take a moment to review the RFI and share your input.
Announcing a Simplified Review Framework for NIH Research Project Grant Applications
NIH will begin implementing changes to its peer review process for the majority of competing research project grant applications submitted on or after January 25, 2025. These changes, informed by extensive input from the biomedical research community, will help reviewers focus on assessing the scientific and technical merit of the proposed research and reduce the potential impact of reputational bias. NIH will also host a webinar on Friday, November 3, 2023, to provide an overview and answer questions on the framework.
