Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis |
|
The United States is experiencing a maternal health crisis with rising rates of pregnancy-related complications and deaths. While many research efforts have focused on understanding pregnancy and newborn outcomes, the majority of severe pregnancy-related complications and maternal deaths occur during the year immediately after pregnancy, also known as the postpartum period. More than 80% of these complications and deaths are preventable. Directors from several other NIH institutes and offices joined me to discuss how we hope the NIH Pathways to Prevention Workshop: Identifying Risks and Interventions to Optimize Postpartum Health will be a catalyst for rapid changes and greatly broaden the research lens. |

Announcing the ODP Art Challenge Awardees!ODP is thrilled to recognize the creativity, quality, and thoughtfulness of 10 young artists from across the country for their original artwork showing what people or communities can do to prevent disease and injury, support well-being, and promote more equitable health outcomes for everyone. Last year, ODP challenged teens and young adults between the ages of 13 and 22 to participate in our art competition, How Prevention Can Create Better Health for Everyone. We received an amazing response, getting nearly 150 drawings, paintings, collages, and digital compositions demonstrating how prevention can help advance health equity. The winning artwork provides insight into some of the pressing health and equity issues young people are thinking about in their lives. Topics range from the importance of social support and community connections, vaccinations, and heart-healthy habits, to the benefits of community gardens and multilingual, inclusive health care. In addition to awarding the artists cash prizes of up to $3,500, ODP is featuring their work on our website and across social media. |

NIH Modifies Application and Review Process for Fellowship Grants to Broaden Scientific Trainee PoolNIH is revising the application and peer review process for grants that enable external institutions to recruit for research training fellowships. Fellowship training awards are a critical part of the development of the biomedical research workforce. The revised approach for peer review of fellowship applications is designed to enhance participation from strong applicants at smaller schools, mentors relatively early in their careers, and well-qualified students with less conventional academic backgrounds. These changes will be effective for fellowship applications due on or after January 25, 2025. NIH Improves Reporting of Minority Health and Health Disparities Research CategoriesNIH is committed to ensuring accountability and transparency of NIH research spending. To this end, NIH is sharing how we review and adapt our methodologies to provide accurate reports of NIH expenditures for NIH Research, Condition, and Disease Categorization (RCDC) categories. This year, the categories of Minority Health, Health Disparities, and Biodefense are being replaced with several new categories to improve their accuracy and transparency. FDA and NIH Want Your Input on a New Resource for Terminology in Clinical ResearchTo avoid the pitfalls that inconsistent use of terms can lead to, NIH and FDA developed a glossary of terms related to clinical research that could be used to assist the research community in effectively communicating about clinical trials. NIH and FDA are most interested in hearing community feedback on the utility of the glossary in its goal of promoting effective communications. Comments will be accepted until June 24, 2024. NIH Releases Resource Related to Consent Language for Studies Using Digital Health TechnologiesThe NIH Office of Science Policy developed a new resource, “Informed Consent for Research Using Digital Health Technologies: Points to Consider & Sample Language,” to inform research teams and Institutional Review Board members who are planning, reviewing, or conducting research that studies or uses digital health technologies. |
