How Prevention Research Advances Population Health: Perspectives from Early Career Scientists |
|

Each year, ODP recognizes future leaders in prevention research through our Early Stage Investigator Lecture. In 2025, we honored three exceptional early career scientists working to advance prevention research by studying cardiovascular disease, tobacco marketing, and diabetes. To learn a little more about what drives them, we asked for their perspectives on why it is so important to invest in prevention research and how they see their work fitting into the broader field of prevention research to create a healthier future for all. |

Opening Soon! 2026 ODP Early Stage Investigator Lecture Nomination Period
Are you or is someone you know an early stage investigator who has made innovative and significant research accomplishments in applied prevention research? Submissions for the 2026 ODP Early Stage Investigator Lecture open September 15, 2025, and nominations are due by October 24, 2025! The award is given every year to early career scientists who have made significant research contributions in prevention but who have not yet been awarded an R01 or R01-equivalent NIH research grant. The awardee(s) will present their research in an online lecture hosted by ODP. They will also have the opportunity to meet and network virtually with NIH program directors and scientists.

NIH Funding Announcements to Align with NIH Initiative to Prioritize Human-Based ResearchOn April 29, NIH announced it is prioritizing human-focused research and reducing animal use in research. To further this initiative, all new notices of funding opportunities that relate to animal model systems now must also support human-focused approaches, such as clinical trials, real-world data, or new approach methods. NIH and FDA Publish Glossary of Clinical Research Terms Related to Innovative Clinical Trial DesignNIH and the FDA have published a new glossary of clinical research terms related to innovative clinical trial design, including studies using real-world data to generate real-world evidence. This glossary is intended to facilitate communication within the clinical research community by establishing a common vocabulary. NIH Issues Policy to Support Originality and Fairness in the Research Application ProcessNIH is issuing a policy to outline guidance for appropriate usage of artificial intelligence in research applications. To support this goal, NIH also is limiting the number of applications that NIH will consider per principal investigator per calendar year. This policy is effective for applications submitted by the September 25, 2025, receipt date and beyond. The NIH Office of Nutritional Research Releases a New Strategic PlanThe NIH Office of Nutrition Research (ONR) strategic plan for fiscal years 2026–2030 outlines how nutrition is central to whole-person health across the lifespan, as well as across generations. Addressing diet-related chronic diseases in children and adults requires an all-hands-on-deck approach. Within NIH, ONR is identifying emerging scientific opportunities, rising public health challenges, and scientific gaps in the field of nutrition. Launch of the Inaugural NIH-Wide Strategic Plan for Autoimmune Disease ResearchThe inaugural NIH-Wide Strategic Plan for Autoimmune Disease Research, issued by the Office of Autoimmune Disease Research in the Office of Research on Women’s Health, sets a bold vision for establishing priorities, coordinating efforts, fostering collaboration, and improving the lives of those living with and at risk for autoimmune diseases.
