The Interagency Committee on Human Nutrition Research (ICHNR) has released the first National Nutrition Research Roadmap designed to guide federal nutrition research. The Roadmap is the result of more than a year of interagency collaboration through the ICHNR and integration of public comments. Representatives from the following departments and agencies developed the Roadmap: the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Agriculture, Department of Defense, Department of Commerce, the Federal Trade Commission, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the United States Agency for International Development, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Veterans Health Administration, and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
The NIH Office of Disease Prevention (ODP) played a key role in developing the Roadmap. The ODP Director, Dr. David Murray, is the NIH representative to the ICHNR and co-chaired the subcommittee and writing group that developed the Roadmap. The ODP Acting Director for Prevention Research Coordination, Dr. Rachel Ballard, was a member of the writing group that drafted the report and was one of four editors who crafted the final report.
The 2016–2021 National Nutrition Research Roadmap encourages an increased focus on research that can lead to more individualized advice for promoting health and preventing disease. It suggests 120 short-term and long-term initiatives across 11 topical areas.
