Environmental Health

The NIH supports research on the effect of the environment on human health, including studies to understand relationships between environmental exposures, human biology, genetics, diseases, and health outcomes.

Resources for Researchers

Explore databases and tools for environmental health research.

Human Health Exposure Analysis Resource (HHEAR)

Access to high-quality, exposure-assessment services including, state of the art laboratory analysis of biological and environmental samples, statistical analysis, and expert consultation on exposure analysis, study design, and data analysis and interpretation. There is no cost to the investigator.

NIEHS Resources for Scientists

A thorough list of resources for environmental health-related research, curated by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). Includes databases, journals, studies, symposia, and software.

Funding

Interested in funding opportunities or planning to submit an application in environmental health research? Use these tools to find what you need:

Training and Education

Learn about NIH programs to help you prepare for careers in environmental health research.

NIEHS Medical Student Research Fellowships

A 1-year research fellowship for third-year medical students to train at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in laboratory, epidemiological, or clinical research related to environmental health issues.

NIEHS Scholars Connect Program

A unique opportunity for highly motivated science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)-focused undergraduate students to connect with the NIEHS and receive frontier-level training in biomedical research.

NIH Summer Internship Program at the NIEHS

An internship for outstanding high school, undergraduate, and graduate students interested in pursuing careers in the biomedical/biological sciences to work on a research project that involves the latest biochemical, molecular, and analytical techniques.

Postdoctoral Training Opportunities at the National Toxicology Program (NTP)

Offers a limited number of postdoctoral training fellowships that prepare scientists for careers in pharmaceutical and chemical industries, regulatory agencies, and academia. NTP develops and applies tools of modern toxicology and molecular biology to evaluate substances that may potentially cause harm to human health.

NIH Institutes/Centers and Federal Partner Activities

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is the NIH component dedicated to environmental health research. Many NIH Institutes and Centers (IC) actively engage in and support research related to environmental exposures and human health and may be helpful starting points as you plan your research or if you’re exploring the latest work in a particular area.
